U of S students create an energetic community where diverse personalities and interests thrive—inside and outside the classroom. Becoming a Student At Large (SAL) on a USSU committee is a great way to get involved with your students’ union and contribute to making our campus a better place.
The USSU is governed by University Students’ Council; to aid Students’ Council, there are a number of committees that review issues in depth and provide recommendations for action to the Executive.
USC shall establish the following standing committees:
Academic Affairs Committee
The Academic Affairs Committee determines all Students’ Union academic policies, and monitors and analyses all academic issues pertaining to the University. This Committee is chaired by the Vice President Academic Affairs; vice-chair is the Vice President Student Affairs, and it is comprised of three Members of Students’ Council (MSC) and three Students At Large (SAL), with the Academic and Governance Assistant and the President as non-voting members.
The Appointments Committee ensures that student positions on the Students’ Union and non-Students’ Union committees are filled. The President sits as Chair, with four Members of Students Council comprising the membership, and the Vice Presidents as non-voting members.
Budget and Finance Committee
Struck to consider all financial and operational matters of the Students’ Union, this Committee is chaired by the Vice President Operations and Finance, while the vice-chair is the Vice President Student Affairs. It is comprised of four Members of Students’ Council, two Student At Large, and the President and General Manager as non-voting members.
The Elections Committee conducts all Students’ Union elections and referendums. The Chief Returning Officer (CRO), a lawyer who is hired annually by the Students’ Union, chairs the committee with the Assistant CRO as vice chair. Two Members of Students’ Council and two Student At Large comprise the membership, with the General Manager and/or designate as a non-voting member.
External Affairs Committee
The External Affairs Committee is responsible for developing and implementing Students’ Union lobbying and campaigns. The President chairs this committee and the Vice President Student Affairs is vice-chair. It is comprised of three Members of Students’ Council, three Student At Large, and the Communications and Marketing Manager as a non-voting member.
Indigenous Student Affairs Committee
The Indigenous Affairs Committee with the President as Chair and the Vice President Student Affairs has as its members the President of the Indigenous Students’ Council, the Indigenous members of USC and four self-declared Indigenous Students-at-Large. The committee seeks to advise the Union on initiatives and opportunities which will strengthen the relationships between Indigenous students and the university community through communications, campaigns, and relationships.
International Student Affairs Committee
The International Student Affairs Committee is composed of the Vice-President Student Affairs as chair and the President as vice-chair. Members are the Presidents of USSU ratified International Student Associations, the International Student members of University Students’ Council, and four self-declared International Students At Large appointed by the Appointments Committee. The International Student Affairs Committee shall seek to strengthen and uphold the relationship between the Union and International student groups and students.
Student Affairs Committee
This Committee is chaired by the Vice President Student Affairs with the vice-chair as the Vice President Academic Affairs. It is comprised of three Members of Students’ Council, three Student At Large, and the President as a non-voting member. It monitors and analyses non-academic issues at the university.
The Sustainability Committee is responsible for all sustainability programs and initiatives within the USSU this Committee is chaired by the Vice President (Student Affairs), and the vice-chair is the Vice President (Operations and Finance). It is comprised of three Members of Students’ Council, three Student At Large, and the President and Facilities Manager as a non-voting member.
